LTI App Integrations

What are LTIs?

Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI) is a technical standard that securely connects third-party educational apps and content with Canvas.

General LTI Request Process:

Instructors who want to use a third-party LTI tool in one or more Canvas courses must first adopt the tool through Collect and complete the Risk Review Form. If the tool is approved, they may then contact infotech@utsouthern.edu for the next steps in the integration process.

  • Please Note: The integration request process is not linear and involves multiple offices for risk review, information gathering, testing, and installation. Because of this, the full process may take approximately 4–6 weeks.

  • Below is guidance for getting LTI tools approved by Collect and completing the Risk Review Form for the LTI integration in Canvas.

Collect LTI Approval Guidance:

Any LTI integration that involves an eTextbook or other online course materials must be approved by the Collect adoptions team by emailing adoptions@vitalsource.com before Distance Learning can install the integration.

  • Notifying Collect of all textbook-related integrations and integrations related to online course materials helps to maintain compliance with UT System Fiscal Policy FI055 as well as HEOA disclosure requirements.
  •  All instructional materials must be officially adopted. Requests for integrations related to textbooks and/or online course materials that have not been adopted and/or approved by Collect will be denied.
  • Instructors that are interested in using an LTI tool that has already been integrated with Canvas will still need to adopt the tool via Collect

LTI Tool Risk Review Guidance:

The Data and Technology Risk Review Form is used by the Cybersecurity Governance, Risk, and Compliance team to review technology requests for compliance, cybersecurity, data risk, and other applicable requirements.

For LTI requests, the form should clearly reflect how the tool will function as an integration with Canvas.

Form Guidance:

  1. Complete the form as the requester or key stakeholder for the tool or service.
  2. Describe the request in the context of Canvas so it accurately reflects how the application will be used in the instructional environment.
  3. Provide accurate information in the fields related to:
  1. Consult the vendor for technical details required to complete the form accurately.
  2. Ensure AI-enabled tools also comply with UT System Policy BT0035 – Policy on Artificial Intelligence.
  • Please Note: Approval of the risk review alone does not authorize use of a tool if it includes any AI functionality. Requests involving AI may be returned by the compliance team for additional information, and any tool with AI features must comply with the applicable AI policy. Please refer to the policy above for compliance requirements.
