Important Information For Chromebook Users & LockDown Browser

  • Installing the Respondus Chromebook Extension to your browser:

To install the new extension to a student-owned Chromebook, students can use this link Download Lockdown Browser to installThe LockDown Browser installation link will direct students to the Chrome web store, at which point they should select “Add to Chrome” to install the LockDown Browser Extension.

  • The issue with Chromebooks provided to you by your high school:

Chromebooks that you receive from your high school cannot be used to take quizzes and exams through Respondus. This is because high-school-appointed Chromebooks are heavily protected. Respondus can be prohibited on the device's browser, and downloads to the device are also prohibited. You will need to use the resources available to you on campus (library, computer labs, student center, or student laptop check out from IT) to take your exams through Respondus. 

  • Things to do before you attempt a Respondus LockDown Browser exam on your Chromebook:
  1. Clear the Cache and Cookies in your Google Chrome
  2. Update your Chromebook's operating system

  3. Restart your device

  • Below is a list of common issues associated with Respondus LockDown Browser on Chromebooks:
  1. Canvas quiz/exam states (in red), "LockDown Browser session not active. Contact instructor..."
  •  Clear the Cache and Cookies in your Google Chrome, refresh your screen, and try the exam again.
  1. I was kicked out of my exam before I was able to complete it.
  • Notify your instructor immediately. Let them know you are using a Chromebook for the Respondus exam and you were kicked out before completing all of the questions. They should reach out to Distance Learning Coordinator, Haley Kinder, or the IT department. 
  1. My Chromebook's screen went white while taking my exam or when I tried submitting my exam.
  • Again, notify your instructor immediately. Do not exit the exam before attempting to gain back access to the LockDown Browser. Doing so may cause you to lose progress made on your exam. Your instructor should check your attempt in Canvas to see if your answers were saved, and they can reach out to Haley Kinder or the IT department. 

*IMPORTANT: If you experience any sort of issue with your exams using your Chromebook, you should inform your instructor immediately. This makes them aware you are experiencing technical issues. You should also contact the IT department (931-424-2009 / infotech@utsouthern.edu).
